Privacy
The short version: Detto processes all audio and text locally on your Mac. We never receive, store, or transmit your voice data. Can't access your data. Not "won't." Can't.
What Detto does not collect
- Your audio — never recorded, never transmitted
- Your dictated text — never leaves your Mac
- Screenshots or screen content
- Keystroke or input data
- Usage analytics or telemetry from the app
- Personal files or documents
What Detto does collect
During normal use, Detto transmits zero bytes of data. The only network activity:
- Initial model download (~3 GB, once) — the AI models are downloaded to your Mac after first launch. No personal data is sent during this process.
- Sparkle update checks — periodic checks to a static file on GitHub for new versions. Can be disabled in Settings.
You can verify this yourself with Activity Monitor or Little Snitch.
Website (detto.app)
The Detto website uses:
- PostHog — anonymous analytics to understand how visitors use the site. Session recordings mask all input fields. No personal data is tied to analytics unless you voluntarily provide your email.
- Loops — if you sign up for updates, your email is stored by Loops for the sole purpose of sending you version notifications. We do not sell, share, or rent your email address.
Email notifications
If you sign up for updates, we will email you when new versions ship and for major updates. No drip campaigns. You can unsubscribe at any time with one click.
Third-party services
Detto the app uses no third-party services during operation. No cloud APIs, no external servers, no data processors. The AI models run entirely on Apple Silicon using local inference.
Data storage
All Detto data — models, preferences, custom dictionary — is stored locally on your Mac in the application support directory. If you delete the app, all data is removed.
Children's privacy
Detto is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we'll note the change date at the top. For material changes, we'll notify email subscribers.
