# Detto

> Detto is a free macOS app for local voice capture: meetings, voice memos and system-wide dictation, transcribed on the Mac itself on Apple Silicon. No account. Source-available under the Business Source License 1.1, converting to MIT in 2030.

## What it does

- Call capture: records both sides of a meeting, filtered to the conferencing app's audio, with speaker diarization into a structured transcript.
- Voice memo: microphone only, saved to its own folder with the same structured output.
- Dictation: hold a key, speak, release; text appears at the cursor in whichever app has focus.
- Output: every capture is a plain .md file with YAML frontmatter (type, date, duration, attendees, tags), ready for Obsidian, VS Code or an agent.
- Context: pick a client and Detto pulls their briefing from your vault (key contacts, current priorities, upcoming dates) before the call.

## How it works

- Speech recognition: Parakeet-TDT v3 on the Neural Engine. Speech recognition auto-detects 25 European languages.
- Text refinement: Llama 3.2 3B (4-bit) via MLX on the GPU. Refinement is tuned for English.
- Network: after a one-time model download of about 3 GB, capture and transcription run offline. The only other network call is an optional update check to a static file on GitHub.

## Requirements

- A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later), macOS 26 or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, about 3 GB of disk for the models. Intel Macs are not supported.
- Permissions: Microphone (all modes), Screen Recording (call capture, for system audio), Accessibility (dictation, for text injection).
